organic rose gardening Knowledge Base
I found black spot of the bottom leaves of a new David Austin rose I planted in the Spring. I need some advice I hate to use chemicals on my lawn, I keep things very organic. I'll tell you what I've done so far and if you could please give me additional advice I would be most greatful!!! I trimmed off any spotted leaves from the stem of the plant. I've checked the stem for any sign of disease and there does not appear to be any. I've cleaned the soil of any fallen leaves. This plant is new, planted rootstock this Spring. The area I planted in had never had roses before. This was the first addition to a rose garden I was just beginning, starting with a rose named Mary Rose which happens to be my recently deceased mom so I really want to keep the plant. PLEASE give me your best advice. No, I'm not watering too much. If I'm guilty of anything it would be watering too little. The summer has been extremely dry and I know I should water them more. Could that be the problem???
Which grass is best for an attractive, environmentally conscious lawn? I'm planning to re-sod a small front yard in eastern Pennsylvania (18' X 28'.) I think I'm in zone 6, climate wise. I live in a historic district, where a traditional looking lawn or a completely landscaped garden is required. The yard faces northwest, and gets strong, full sunlight in the afternoon. I don't have much time for gardening, so I'm planning a small lawn surrounded by a low, evergreen hedge (small boxwoods unless I can find something more interesting.) The foundation plantings in front of my house are azaleas and shrub roses. I use all organic methods and no chemical fertilizers whenever possible. I'd prefer a lawn that doesn't have to be watered, once it's established, for environmental reasons. I use a rotary, hand-pushed lawnmower, so a finer textured grass would be preferred, if available. (The environmental factor is more important to me.)
HELP! How do you get Rid of Crab Grass!? That stuff is horrible! it is mixed in with My Roses and Flower Gardens, any safe and organic way to get Rid of it ? the Roots Go down very deep! no Fair! Is nitrogen bad for roses? I am told that nitrogen is bad for roses. Is this true? I would like to know what is the best feed for roses (either made-up chemicals or organic matter). And what substances in the garden are likely to have a high nitrogen content? I am asking this last question so that I can avoid using those substances on roses, if nitrogen is really harmful to them. THANKS! I hope you have LOTS of lovely roses this year in your gardens....
What happened to "Drop out and Tune In""Asking Alice" and the great American Road trip???? A friend is leaving New York City, the "Right Coast" for the "Left Coast" in two weeks, bound for San Clemente, California.I am soooooooo jealous he gets to "Drop Out" and "Tune In". 40 years ago this was the norm and expected, although with a little help, which would require one to "Go ask Alice".Ahh, sad, these days we found out that the Great American "Go ask Alice" Experiment Failed. The 2006 "Drop Out and Tune In" means you enjoy plying the road in a Lexus for a month before you end up and MBA program at Berkeley. If Grace Slick of "Jefferson Starship" sang "Go Ask Alice"....well, different program entirely...... So you get to the 'Spiritual Alice", i.e., this Alice, Birkenstock clogged, short, punky hair with chunky blond highlights concealing her grays-she will hand you a granola bar as you pass the Caterpillar, who tuned his mushroom into a vacation condo and will be seen running off, attending his 12 step Hookah anonymous meetings. They had to leave Olde England for Northern California for tax reasons. The Red Queen took advantage of an early retirement program and now runs a Lesbian Retreat House, called "The Door Knocker", an ill understood reference to some retro term from a half a century ago, which referred to the brass thing that people used to think would talk back to them as they clunked it on the front door. Poor doorknocker has been relegated to a glass memoirs cabinet, along with a dusty picture of Timothy Leary, the Caterpillars's old hookah (makes a wonderful vase for fresh cut flowers too), all managed by the Rabbit, who got his MBA in the hospitality business at Northwestern. Rabbit recently reflected: "Oh, poor us, we all lost the way with the Turtle Doves at some point and ended up in the retail chain Bed and Breakfast line, not like the old days at all". "After the red knights refused to work with non organic paint, we had to give up the rose garden for local, indigenous varieties of fauna". "Red Queen bailed out on stock options."

Tomato Gardening Help? I have fruit set on my early girl tomato, but the fruit appears to be growing no larger been over 2 weeks and no change in fruit size or color. Is there something I might be doing wrong? A couple weeks ago we had some drastic fluctuations in temp. and pretty heavy rain where the plant was practically drowned. added extra drainage and pruned damaged areas and plant recovered ... however it does have curly leaf and some of the new flowers don't appear to be setting properly but I think that might be from the wild temps. I water 1-2 times per week depending on the temp and fertilize every 14-20 days. Container has two companion marigolds growing with it. While plant is in a container it is not root bound and does continue to put new growth and flowers on every day. Soil mixture of loamy peat, potting soil with perlite and moisture control miracle grow mix. I use an organic spray to control pests and powdery mildew gets a fine mist every 30 days or so *mum said to use the one for roses and vegetables.*
Can someone translate this wedding summary into a paragraph? I need a brief paragraph about thiswedding and am having trouble trying to narrow all the info needed into a paragraph.if someone can help me break it down because they need the majority of the listed info mentioned We decided to make our celebration a weekend event. We desired creating community together with our families and our closest friends. To be true to ourselves and our values, it is going to be organic and environmentally focused. Out of love and consideration to others we want to consider our interests and values as well. One of our main wedding goals is to show the best of who we are. “From the beginning, we have envisioned our wedding experience as a celebration that brings together our family and close friends in a relaxed environment that reflects our values while at the same time respects our cultural traditions. We see the weekend as a model for the lives that we would like to live.” We wanted a wedding that was unique, fun and most of all small and intimate. We wanted to celebrate our big day with our families.http://www.edgeworthinn.com The inn is an 1896 National Register of Historic Places Property. The Edgeworth Inn is an antique filled Queen Ann style home nestled in Monteagle's Chautauqua Assembly which was founded in 1883 and has been continuously operating since its inception with 300 acres to explore atop the Cumberland Plateau. Our ceremony is Saturday, October 24,2009 at 11:00 in the morning. It will be held in the beautiful garden which will be filled with fall foliage and flowers. The Moses Rock Spring, housed in an old stone structure in an area called Moses Rock Park, was the original source of water for the visitors and animals of the Assembly in the 1800s. In 2007, to commemorate the 125th year of the existence of the Assembly grounds, longtime resident Aileen O’Brien devised the idea of a water feature and gardens on a previously neglected hillside, which would be enjoyed by children at play and enhance the greenspace near the pool and central buildings. A young stonemason from Lookout Mountain, D.J. Giles, was selected to create the water feature, and Aileen O’Brien developed the landscaping. An Assembly member, Mrs. Ruth Grace Jervis, provided the funding as a memorial for her recently deceased husband, Wayne Talmage Jervis, Jr., who was a skilled landscaper and cultivated beauty wherever he lived. A year was spent developing the area now known as Moses Rock Park and Waterfall. The water pours out from under a rock and builds up steam as it rolls down the landscape, splashing into a "pondless" basin with water-loving natives. A gazebo, stone tables and benches provide shady seats to enjoy the sounds of falling water. According to O’Brien, the landscaping is ongoing and continues each spring. Among the plants that are included along the water feature are Ferns, Roses, Junipers, Hostas, Azaleas (both native and cultivated), Rhododendron, Iris, Columbine, Daylilies, Carolina Jasmine, Creeping Phlox, Creeping Jennie, Narcissus, Butterfly Bush, French ***** Willows, Red Crape Myrtle, Forsythia, Dogwoods, River Birch, and Mountain Laurel, and a number of water plants, herbs, and annuals. The Rev. William S Wade, former headmaster of our school will be conducting the ceremony. 2 hours ago - 4 days left
Soil preparation for flower bed (country: Ireland)? I am a complete beginner in the art (or science as some may argue) of gardening. Had always admired good gardens so just thought of giving it a go this summer. I got rid of the grass first in a distant airy sunny corner of the garden. Used a few large bags of organic compost to prepare an elevated bed. Planted a mix of marigold and roses. Watered and fed them regularly and also used the pesticide that was specially made for roses. Within 2 weeks, loads of flowers around the garden. Could be happier. Until yesterday - when I noticed some of the green marigold leaves turning maroon/red/violet and some of the marigolds completely eaten out. A closer look revealed a lot of caterpillar/leech on the small plants and in soil. Where the hell did they come from? Should I have used some top soil on top of compost? What went wrong? How can I tackle the situation? SOS...
Humourless hippies? Why? I just spent the afternoon in a garden with 150 hippies, all doing mindfulness, eating organic food, painting childrens' faces, telling stories and generally meditating the hell out of each other. All very nice and pleasant but WHERE'S THE *&£$£$ING SENSE OF HUMOUR GONE???!!! Honestly, this lot are as bad as evangelical Christians. No - actually they're worse. Evangelicals can laugh at themselves (cos we're all sinners, right?). Hippies take themselves so seriously you feel you should bow and throw rose petals as they walk by. Hrrr hgggghgrrr. ... no i didn't crack any dodgy jokes, i was a picture of benign inconsequence.
garden problems... daffodil leaves yellow and falling, tulip leaves dead..:-(? I know it's past bloom season in my area for these specific flowers, they bloomed beautifully when they did! In years past, they usually stuck around and gave a pretty green ground cover and were strong and green most of the year. This year, the daffodill leaves have fallen over and turned yellow. The tulips' leaves all dried up and had to be pulled from the dirt. I noticed a blackish powder like mold (i am assuming) at the bases of the tulip's leaves when i pulled them. Did this kill them all off? will they come back ok next year? any ideas on if i need to treat this and if it will affect my neighboring rose bush? (rose bush looks great right now and blooming beautifully with the exception of one or two yellowing leaves) I am sure i have been watering properly, no different than in years past. The only thing i did this year was add a bag of topsoil to the top of the flower bed. weed pulling took a lot of the dirt off the surface so i replaced with some ACE brand plain organic soil.
Help with weeds!? I have a garden in my front yard with roses, tulips, freesia, lilac, and two types of succulents (not sure what they are). It is a very full garden and looks great but I have these annoying vine type weeds that grow all over everything. It goes like crazy, wraps around my roses, takes over. I am constantly pulling them up and can never get them all - then in 2 days they are all back! Is there some type of weed killer I can get that will get the vine thing but not hurt my plants? Any other ideas as to how I can get rid of these stinkin vines? I would prefer to use something organic, if at all possible. Thanks!
